Audio support in ESXi 6.5U1

I recently noticed the option to add a sound card in ESXi 6.5 U1 when editing a VM's settings. How exactly does this work? Does it pass through virtual machine audio to the server's onboard sound hardware, or does it provide audio for remote connections?

A little testing answered my own question. It appears that adding a 'sound' device provides remote playback via the VMware Remote Console. Since I'm going for a local console for ESXi w/ GPU passthrough, my best bet is probably just to pass through the HDMI audio device on my Radeon.
