Adding physical disk to ESXi5.1

Hello all,

I've added a 2Tb SATA drive (hot swap, to be used for backing up VM's) to a HP DL380 G8 server hoping that ESXi would pick it up. I've tried running a rescan/refresh in configuration>storage but it has yet to appear

I know the server sees the new drive as the LED flashes on/off

Is the only recourse to power down the ESXi host and power up?

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon,

Did you just physically insert the disk into the host, or have you configured it as a logical drive through the array controller?

If you haven’t done the latter, you’ll need to do that first, which will (I believe) require you to reboot to access the array controller utility (or boot to it from SmartStart).

If you have, you should just then be able to go onto Configuration > Storage and “Add Storage”, which should then see the drive as a local disk that you can mount as a datastore.

Simon,

Is it a brand new disk or has it been used before?

Hi Tim,

I just got the customer to insert drive thinking I would have immediate access...

Sounds like your right concerning giving it a reboot and running through the RBSU
