Adding CPU's?

I have a virtual w2003 server running a sql database that was only given 1 CPU at the beggining. I know that it at least needs 2. Do I need a virtual SMP license to accomplish this or can I simply apply the change by edit the hardware setting and change the cpu to 2? We have a Dell Poweredge 2950 withdual CPU with quad core x 5460.

thanks

Hi lsulax,

Any ESX 4 version will support at least 4-way vSMP. So adding a second vCPU does not require any new license.

Which EDITION (of ESX, or ESXi) are you running? Are you on 4.0 or 4.1?

VMware VCP4

You need to power the VM off and have the right to modify its settings.
