I have a Dell 2950 with four eSATA 500GB spindles in raid 5 and would like to add significantly more storage in the form of an external enclosure supporting more eSATA spindles in raid 5 or 10 driven from an approved card like the Adaptec 2045. If everything I add is on the approved list, should I be able to start the box and see the new space so it can be added as a new datastore? I realize that command line hacking may be necessary but I just want to be sure the concept is sound and doesn't require rebuilding the box from scratch.
Thanx,
Garth
Hi,
Well as long as your storage controller is on the HCL (See http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl ) then that should be fine.
Can't say that i'm seeing your suggested controller on there though.... so you might want to opt for another one.
Oops my bad, look like it is there alright [Search result 2045|http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=search&deviceCategory=io&productId=1&advancedORbasic=advanced&maxDisplayRows=50&key=2045&release[]=13&datePosted=-1&partnerId[]=4&ioTypeId[]=-1&manufacturer[]=-1&chipset[]=-1&firmware[]=-1&nports[]=-1&vid=&did=&svid=&ssid=&rorre=0]

edit: added search result
what a nice mess the forum software makes of embedded brackets, the "Search Result 2045" link does work though...
Ok to not edit that same post yet another time...
Here's another link that might help as it also lists your suggested adapter as a) working and b) it links to other threads in the forum that are about this specific controller.
http://www.vm-help.com//esx40i/esx40_whitebox_HCL.php#Storage
But there's a good chance that you've seen it already...
