Add USB Hard Drive?

Dumb Question,

Unboxed a new 1TB USB drive and plugged it in. Plugged it in to a few systems and it shows up (windows). I can't see it in the storage area of the client. Rebooted the host, no change. I see it seems possible to do this, but I'm a virtualization rookie here so I don't know if it should be auto-detected or not! Just tried a flash drive, same thing. Hitting refresh on the devices list doesn't do it, nor does adding storgae list either device. I looke dunder storage adapters as well with no luck. Any idea's?

From the release note (http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esx40_vc40_rel_notes.html):

Although you can add USB controllers to virtual machines, attaching USB devices is not supported.
