About vDS configuration

Hi,

Currently, vDS configured as below

Uplink name: Trunk_active

Port group: vlan71, vlan72, vlan38, vlan79

Under VLAN policies, VLAN type was configured to VLAN ID 71, 72, 38 and 79 respectively. It's connected as fibre cable

===================================

One additional host haven't fibre card and I would like to connect vlan71 only.

Thus I added this host to existing vDS and assigned NIC to Trunk_active.

But I found it's not connected.

Could you advice.

Thanks

Below "Trunk" uplink  (Same uplink fibre cable) with VLAN38, 71 and 72

If I added additional host (no fibre cable, CAT6 only) to this "Trunk" uplink with VLAN71 only, it's not connected.

The " CAT6 only" is it in trunk mode with allowed vLAN as 71 or is it set to access mode with vLAN 71?

Just another question, trunk_active and trunk_standby only have one uplink each right?

Just a question - where do you see that the nic is not connected?

Can you post a screenshot, please?

Trunk_active / Trunk_standby

  • fibre cable
  • trunked vlan71 / 72 / 38 in physical switch

vlan71_active

  • cat 6 cable
  • no trunk, assigned vlan71 is physical switch only

Otherwise, I found other network like "vlan203" below which it not tunk. VLAN type is "None".

==========

Yes, only one uplink for each fibre cable

It's connected under vCenter / even VM under additional host.

But this VM can't communicate with gateway

So I guess, will physical trunked need VLAN type as "VALN" with ID

pastedImage_0.png

But physical not trunked have to set to "None"

Thus Cat6 cable (physically not tunked) can't access to "Trunk_active" ?

If the physical switch port is set to access mode with vLAN 71, then you dont need any vLAN tagging in vSwitch/DVS.

go thorugh the linked KB once.

This mean below configuration is available to trunk port (physically) only and inaccessible to access port (physically) ?

pastedImage_1.png

Thus, CAT6 cable have to change to trunk port (physically) to meet the network configuration in vCenter ?

I am not sure about that.. what I am sure about is that even if the configuration is available it would not be useful.. the software's job is to showcase all options its up to us which one suits our configuration.

Network was connected after I changed physical port from "Access mode" to "Trunk mode" to meet vDS configuration

if this is OK with you you can keep the configuraton...  but if the requirement is specific to run the switchport in access mode then we have to troubleshoot further..

choice is urs
