A better description for "Datastore capability alarm"

I have been trying to find a description for the "Datastore capability alarm". From the list of Alarms in the VC there is this: Default alarm that triggers when the capability status changes for volume(s) backing the datastore.

I guess I don't understand what "capability status for volume(s)" means exactly/specifically. Can anyone explain?

Thanks. That helps to clear that up. I wasn't sure what they meant by "capabilities" there.
