64bit Guests/VT?

So does this mean you can run 64bit VM's without VT extentions? I dont think so, but then again there isnt much info on this bullet point.......

Achieve near-native virtual machine performance, reliability and

scalability with production-proven hypervisor technology that runs

directly on server hardware, without the need for a host operating

system.

I think that's just referring to the fact that the ESX hypervisor has gone 64-bit. Probably means that you can only run ESX on 64-bit CPUs, rather than the other way around of being about to run VMs on non-64bit VT processors.

Yep, that's correct, vSphere requires 64bit hardware.

Take a look at this article: http://searchvmware.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid179_gci1354027_mem1,00.html

As stated, you won't be able to install ESXi unless you have 64 bit processors. You will be able to install on Intel CPUs without VT, but you'll just be able to run 32 bit guests. VT is still required for 64 bit guests.

Does that mean that 64 bit COS ha nothing to do with 54 bit VM's, VMware still depends on Harware ware vendor to install 64 bit vm's??

Please help me to understan this.

No you will still require VT, RVI etc to run 64bit guests, the remark refers to the hypervisor now being a 64bit peice of software, this enables the serious boost in Memory capacity for the hosts etc

Hello,

Consider it this way.

There is ESX which is now 64bit and requires 64 bit hardware

and

There are 64 Bit VMs, which still require Intel-VT or AMD-V extensions to run within ESX.

There will most likely be a new CPUID ISO you can run to verify your hardware.
