We will soon upgrade from 5.5 to 5.5U3. Will VMWare Tools need be upgraded also??

Don't have  to upgrade VMtools ，but  suggest upgrade . You can use Update Manager upgrade it.

If you upgrade Esxi 5.5 to 5.5 U3 new Vmware tools will be available on the Esxi host.

All the Vm's will show Tools out dated need to be update as per best practice.
