Hi All,
We are experimenting with DPM on one of our clusters and currently on two host machines, Dell R710s. We have the DPM configured and it is using ACPI and the power management on the host machine is set to manual (never turn on). After a couple of days or two the 2 host machines power themselves on.
We have had a look through the setup and I cannot see anything that maybe causing this. Anyone any ideas?
If DPM is in manual, there should not be automatic host power on operation from standby mode. It has to provide recommendations & admin has to apply if required.
I have some queries:
what was the work load on these hosts? what was the host capaciy from CPU/Memory?
What was the DPM threshold?
what was the DRS threshold and automation level?
did you configure any DRS rules?
did you enable HA ?
did you use IPMI-iLo/WOL?
did you try manually putting host into standby and taking it back to powered on state?
I did not get "never turn on" comment from you.
Answer to all above query can give us better insight.
Hi Vicky,
Here's some replies to your questions. Hope they help
what was the work load on these hosts? what was the host capaciy from CPU/Memory?
We have two that are powered into standby mode. The three remaining hosts are relatively quiet running at around 40-60% cpu utilisation and 45-60% memory utilisation.
What was the DPM threshold?
The default pawer management for the cluster is set to manual and the DPM threshold is set to 2 - apply priority 2 or higher recommendation.
what was the DRS threshold and automation level?
DRS automation is set to partially automated. The migration threshold is set to 1,2,3 and 4 recommendations.
did you configure any DRS rules?
There are a couple of rules to keep pairs of servers apart. 3 rules to keep 3 pairs of servers on seperate hosts.
did you enable HA ?
Yes this is configured
did you use IPMI-iLo/WOL?
WOL
We had hoped we had configured everything to require manual changes.
