5.5 U1, multiple NICs, configure non-management NIC w/static addresses

Running free version of 5.5 U1 w/vSphere Client.

There are a half dozen assorted VMs all of which are off at this point.

The machine has 2 NICs.

vmnic0:

vSwitch0

Configured as the management port

Static IP set up via console

Works fine

vmnic1:

vSwitch1

I want it to host a subnet with no DHCP service (and I don't want to make DHCP available).

When I connect vmnic1 to the same net as vmnic0, it works

When it's not connected to anything, it doesn't come up

How do I configure vmnic1 to have a static IP and come up even if no cable is plugged in?

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do. What's the reason that you want to assign an IP address to vmnic1? If this vmnic is used for a Virtual Machine network, there's no need to assign an IP address to it. The IP addresses will be configured in the guests/VMs.

I have since discovered that my assumptions were wrong and that I'm not supposed to assign anything to vmnic1.

I have also since discovered that if I connect a cable from the NIC to a small switch, vmnic1 comes up as expected even though there's nothing for it to communicate with.

I think this topic can be closed. Thank you.
