4.1 to 5.5

Hi all

I have a esx4.1 that I would like to upgrade to a 5.5, this is an old server , so I was thinking, if it is better just start a new installation of vmware 5.5 on a totally new server and if that is the case how you gurus advise to transfer/migrate VM from the old server to the totally new server.

Thansk a bunch gurus

If you don't have a vCenter there are a couple of options.

1.  Use a program such as the VMware Converter, Platespin Migrate, etc to migrate the VM from the 4.1 host to the 5.5 host.

2.  The other option is to copy the VM files directly using WinSCP or a similar tool.

Personally, I prefer to use option 1.

The first question would be is the hardware still on the HCL for 5.5?

Gotcha...  Next question(s)...

1.  Do you have vCenter?

2.  Are there other hosts to migrate the VMs to?

We did a 4.1 to 5.5 project here, but we took hosts out of the cluster, rebuilt as 5.5, upgraded vCenter to 5.5, joined the 5.5 hosts to the upgraded vCenter, migrated the VMs over and upgraded hosts as we went...

I always prefer to rebuild as opposed to upgrade.

Ben.

I hope I make sense as I am new to this.

The 4.1 we have, does not have vcenter, is just the an esxi host that contain three VM and is only one host, so there is not a cluster, the old machine is way to old, so I dont think i will reuse that one.

so I take I would create it this the right way

   Host

   Vcenter

but I would like to know what option do you think is best to migrate/transfer/move the VM that are hosting in the old (4.1) host to the new machine.

Thanks a bunch again chief

u d man, Thanks a bunch for all your hep, I will make the new one correctly with vcenter and all that good stuff, and I will decommission the other server once the new one has the right VM.

1) to use the vmconverter does the VM has to be off?
