Recent UEM slow logon (Windows 10 LTSB 1607 with up to date patches, UEM 9.1 Console and 9.6 agent, View agent 7.6-7.7, View server 7.3.2 to 7.7)

We enabled the verbose windows GUI logon messages and see that quite a bit of time is spent applying UEM policy.

To see whats going on, we enabled the Horizon View Logon Monitor service to see if it shows anything interesting and it has an odd behavior. If we log on locally to the golden image, in addition to logging to vmlm.txt, as expected, it logs to another file "vmlm__hostname_useranme_02_21_2019__22_01_44_0864.txt" If we compose a pool with this, instant or linked clone, it logs to vmlm.txt but not to "vmlm__hostname_useranme_02_21_2019__22_01_44_0864.txt". Any idea why that would happen? The registry settings look to be default.pastedImage_0.png

I can open a ticket and provide lots of other logs that might help identify this and other issues that are slowing logon.

Here is vmlm.txt and uem further below:

Hi EricNichols,

Just over half of the 40-ish seconds that UEM takes overall is spent on importing Internet Explorer settings:

2019-02-26 13:55:51.606 [INFO ] Importing profile archive 'Internet Explorer.zip' (\\domain.local\shares\vdi\UEMProfiles\username\archives\Windows Settings\Internet Explorer.zip)
2019-02-26 13:55:51.624 [DEBUG] ImportRegistry::Import: Calling '"C:\Windows\REGEDIT.EXE" /S "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\FLX8072.tmp"' (RPAL: l=0 (D/E), r=0)

2019-02-26 13:56:12.113 [DEBUG] Read 491 entries from profile archive (size: 30939074; compressed: 2300374)

I see that you have folder redirection configured for the 'Favorites' folder. Without a log of the UEM export I can't say for sure, but I assume that some of those "491 entries" are favorites, which means that UEM is extracting them from the remote profile archive zip, and then writing them to the remote Favorites folder. That can add up to quite a few network round trips, which are relatively time consuming.

As the topic title mentions that this is a recent phenomenon: is that folder redirection setting maybe a recent change?

As folder redirection will take care of the users' favorites, you can update the Internet Explorer config file to exclude them from the profile archives, by adding the following lines:

[ExcludeFolderTrees]

<Favorites>

Also, although it's not at all pertinent to the symptoms you're seeing: the topic title mentions that you're using the UEM 9.6 agent, but the log file is for 9.1.

Wow UEMdev , we have been duplicating Favorites from day one, imagine how many hours of productivity we could have saved! Thank you so much. Not like anyone uses IE anyways but it shaved 20 seconds off of my login because the default profile has quite a number of default favorites.

We are in the middle of an upgrade\migration hence the mixed versions of stuff. Some pools have UEM agent 9.1 some 9.6. It appears that downgrading the View agent to 7.3.2 has fixed the logon monitor. It may have fixed some other initial usb redirection issues too that required a disconnect\reconnect to attach USB devices. Updating UEM agent to 9.6 does not seem to have introduced any issues.

So now Im a bit reluctant to update the view agent to the latest version because it seems to break lots of stuff but thats a topic for a different forum. It seems to be a regular occurrence for the View agent developers to introduce bug regressions, it has been referenced several times in threads here. So long as we dont need new featuers in View agent 7.7, I guess we will stick with 7.3.2 even though the servers we are migrating to is at 7.7

We still struggle with some slow logon issues but at least now the logon monitor is working and that will help us further identify where some of the logon timing issues are.

Thanks again!

Hi EricNichols,

Happy to hear that not sending favorites across the wire multiple times speeds up your login so much. I'll see if I can come up with some logic in the UEM agent to warn about such situations.

To be honest, I did not pay any attention to the VMLM log you posted, as I'm not very familiar with that. A few releases ago (don't recall exactly, but later than 9.1 for sure) we added a small integration with VMLM, in that we send a few UEM events to VMLM, but that's about it...

For UEM-specific logon times, the UEM log is sufficient – if you run into other UEM perf issues, please reach out to us on this forum.

As for USB redirection issues: there are some well known issues between certain versions of the Horizon and UEM agents. I think it generally works well with Horizon 7.3.x, although it might happen that USB redirection is enabled even though you configured a UEM Smart Policy setting to disable it. With Horizon 7.4 and 7.5, it's the other way around: USB redirection might be disabled, regardless of UEM Smart Policy – typically a bigger issue. This incompatibility was finally fixed in Horizon 7.6 (requiring UEM 9.5).
