Can UEM migrate Windows roaming profiles?

I'm deploying UEM into an existing View environment. They use roaming profiles today, so users have a bunch of data located in those profiles. If we deploy UEM, how can I ensure data and settings that are currently in the user's Windows roaming profile is captured and migrated to UEM?

Hi iforbes,

The following two articles may help you with the migration to UEM. They are aimed at migrating Persona Management to UEM, but also valid for roaming profiles to UEM.

How to migrate VMware Persona Management to VMware User Environment Manager (2118056) | VMware KB

Thanks! Another question. My customer already has App Volumes deployed. Currently, app configs/personalizations are saved in App Volumes. If UEM is deployed, which solution will "win" for saving app configs/personalizations? I'm a little confused as to how they interoperate.

Thanks

Hi iforbes,

There's not really a "winner" in that scenario. UEM doesn't care whether the profile settings it saves to a profile archive are coming from a "real" Windows profile, or from an App Volumes writable volume. Similarly, when importing settings from a profile archive, UEM doesn't care whether they end up in a "real" profile or in a writable.

Does that help?

I recall App Volumes used to have a template that allowed application personalizations to persist on a per user type basis. If UEM wasn't in the picture and we wanted per user application personalizations to persist, I suppose the user would also need a writable volume? Just trying to fully understand if a user has been given an application via App Volumes and they also have a writable volume, will the addition of UEM into the mix now confuse things as to where the application personalizations will exist?

This discussion does a good job explaining what I mean:

Re: Writable Volume Templates - Differences?

You notice that there are App Volume templates that include User Profile. My question is with UEM in the picture, if a customer has deployed App Volumes using the 'Template_uia_plus profile - User Installed Apps + User Profile settings' writable volume template, where will the user profile settings now reside? Within App Volumes or UEM - or both? That's what I meant by who wins?

Ok. I finally found the community discussion around all of this!

Writable volume change with profile

"Writable Volumes Profile and UIA+ Profile Templates support: From App Volumes 2.9, the support for Writable Volumes Profile and UIA+ Profile Templates will be deprecated. Cusotmers on App Volumes 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.9 (and any future 2.x) versions using Profile Only or UIA + Profile Writable Volumes Templates will continue to receive support for bug fixes through hot patches. Although using App Volumes writable volumes for managing end user profiles has provided huge benefits over traditional profile management solution with their speed of delivery and reduced IOPS, VMware UEM is a new paradigm in user environment management. This is the first step in integrating VMware App Volumes and VMware UEM to provide a more agile, flexible and mobile workspace for your end users. Support for Writable Volumes UIA templates will continue in the future releases"

So, it seemed like the Writable Volumes Profile mgmt. part was to be deprecated after 2.9. Is that now the case? Does 2.12 still have the functionality of Writable volumes to store user profile? If the answer is yes, and UEM is also in the picture, where is the user profile specific info stored (writable volumes or UEM, or both)? If the answer is no, and UEM is not in the picture, where do user specific profile info get stored when working with writable volumes (and say non-persistent desktops)?

The answer is 'both'. And since UEM with DirectFlex enabled will import and export settings in real-time, UEM will probably 'win'.

But is doesn't really matter, because both locations will contains the same content anyway, so there is not really a conflict.
