vmware-afad.exe - "Drive not ready" problem. Missing Drive A:

Ok, I want to try out VmWare Converter on a running Win2000+SP4

OS.

When I start now VmWare converter 3.0 in order to create a VM from this

running Win2000 system I got a popup:

vmware-ufad.exe - Drive not ready

The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Please check drive A: and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed.

Hmmm, what is meant by "door"? There is no door.

Two month ago (a long time after I installed the Win2000 system)

my floppy disk (=Drive A:) gets physically damaged.

So I cannot access it. This is not a problem for me because I don't

need this drive any more. However my system works fine

without this drive although internally Drive A: seems to still exists.

Maybe this is the reason for the troubles. But:

VmWare should either

\- read only internal configuration and setup the VM from these infos

or

\- Check also physical machine but offer in case of problems an exclusion of certain devices.

Is there a solution for this information ?

Matt

I think the expression "door" goes way back to the days when floppy drives had doors (they were actually levers that closed over them).

You can always remove or disable the floppy drive and/or controller in Device Manager.

This sounds like a Windows system error message. Do you have any "virtual" floppy/CD drive devices on the physical host? These devices can be installed if you have any kind of remote access controllers like DRAC/iLO on the physical host. If you do, can you try disabling them and trying again?

You can also check for any hidden floppy drives by type SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 at a CMD prompt and then DEVMGMT.MSC and then select Show Hidden Devices

I agree with this, disable the drive in the bios so that it does not show up in the OS. It would appear that converter is trying to get a handle on all the disk drives in the system before starting, and getting an error on the A drive.
