running vmware converter inside virtual machine

I am trying to run the vmware vcenter converter standalone inside a Windows vmware fusion guest. (The purpose is to convert existing VHD and/or TIB to VMDK and I have no access with administrator rights to a windows based computer).

When I run the converter, I get the failed to impersonate error.

When I click OK I am presented with:

Filling in administrator's username and password I get:

When I check:

netstat -ano | findstr 443

nothing is displayed.

So I check the log files in c:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs\

I notice several warning related to unsigned files and at the end (after the service is started) the line (#182 in the log below):

is logged. Now on most systems the word panic means something very bad went wrong, however, here it is log as an ordinary "info" type. Following this line, things that are logged involve the attempt to run the converter which resulted in the images above.

Can converter be run inside a vm? (if not, then why not if i am not trying to do p2v but simple v2v conversion)

Hi,

why do you put localhost? you have to put the IP address or the server name ... otherwise select the other option.

Which server? I mean, the tool is called standalone so what server do i need other than the server service of the converter (on the local machine)? And if I select the other option, I am back to imporsonate error.

Well, even if the installtion is local, the client connects to something and that something should be the server service running on the localhost and that should probably be listening on port 443. Which it is not. Even then, i tried the suggested steps to enable other protocols, it results in the same sequence of events. I am quite sure that the problem is that there is no vmware service listening or the proper port.
