So here I am again.
Running a V2V conversion on a Windows 2K8 box. I get the "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine." error when I try the conversion. So I try running the "vmware-vdiskmanager with the -R option and it replies "No errors were found on the virtual disk,...". I try the conversion again and the same error. The error comes back almost instantaneously.
Attached is the generated log files. I looked but I would like another opinion because I can't seem to fix it.
This is using Converter 5.1.
Stil the same error:
2013-06-19T11:35:58.995-04:00 [01364 info 'Default'] Sysimgbase_DiskLib_OpenWithPassPhrase failed with 'The specified virtual disk needs repair' (error code:14)
Because this could be incompatibility with older VMDK format you can downgrade the Converter version to 4.3 or 4.0.1 and try the conversion again.
If you succeed with conversion but fail with reconfig, you can try the reconfig only task on destination VM with latest version (i.e. 5.1).

OK, downgraded to 4.3 and then 4.0.1. Both failed but later on in the process, after hitting finish. Still the -R option says that there is nothing wrong with the VM.
Any other ideas?
Attached are the logs from the 4.3 and 4.0.1.version.
From 4.3 log:
[#2] [2013-06-19 20:08:15.517 05932 error 'App'] CreateVm task failed: The device or operation specified at index '1' is not supported for the current virtual machine version 'vmx-04'.
[#2] A minimum version of 'vmx-06' is required for this operation to succeed.
self explaining error...

So this is saying my target machine is 04 and this only works with 06 and above?
Yes, the destination VM should use hardware version 6 or above.
That is strange then because I am converting the source to ESXi 5.1. Isn't that 09? These are the same settings I have other time for similar VMs.
There is combo box with hardware selection in Converter Wizard. If you ise Workstation as destination, choose more recent version. HTH
