"Operating System not found" after conversion using Vmware Converter 3

Looking for some help...

The server is an HP ML350 - about 3 years old. I ran the converter against it and the job completed without errors. However, I am unable to boot the server. I get an "Operating System Not Found" error. I already tried the following:

1. Mounted the vmdk as a secondary disk on another VM

2. modified the boot.ini

3. checked that the disk was marked active

4. changed the disk from BUSLOGIC to LSI

5. Tried running Windows Recovery with FIXBOOT, FIXMBR

I'm all out of options.

any ideas??

Sounds like you're done just about everything possible. Have you tried mapping a Windows 2000 (or whatever OS you are running) install CD to the server. Pressing ESC at the BIOS screen , select CD-ROM as the boot device and then doing a Repair on the OS. Maybe one of the critical boot files was corrupted.

I had something similar, appeared to be a different order of the disks. Origionally it were two sata disks, after changing the disks to different scsi id's it booted...

Problem solved. Oversight on my part.

VMware Converter made the "D" partition DISK0 and the "C" partition DISK1. I switch them around in ESX Console and the server started right up.

...and now I know for next time.
