If the virtual disk to be created is larger than 256GB and your block size is set to 1GB then you'll receive this error message because the block size for the datastore is set to 1MB (the default). With a block size of 1MB the largest file you can create (and thus the largest virtual disk) is 256GB.

You'd have to adjust the block size of your datastore (which would likely mean wiping/re-creating the datastore) to get a larger block size and thus larger maximum file size.

A block size of 2MB = 512GB maximum file size

A block size of 4MB = 1024GB maximum file size

A block size of 8MB = 2048GB maximum file size

Hope that helps.

You sure helped me from going nuts when trying to create a 300gb disk in vmware converter. The fail message in vmvare converter.log gave absolutely no help at all.

Thanks
