I need to downsize a winxp vm's disk (pre-allocated). I had hoped to use the converter to do so, without adding it to the XP vm. I installed the converter on a win2k machine and began the import. The import source was "Standalone Virtual Machine...." (where the VM is a workstation 6 image). The source VM was accessed via windows networking share from the win2k box.
the import failed very quickly after selecting the source VM, with the following in the log:
Incompatible registry format, guest=5.1 host=5.0
VmiQuerySourceInfoTask::task: Image processing task has failed with MethodFault::Exception: sysimage.fault.IncompatibilityFault
and a very similar message in a dialog on the screen ("unable to read the source VM's registry"). I have verified there are no networking problems involved.
Any way to work around this without installing the converter on the VM? I'd prefer not to create a "disposable" XP VM for this task, if possible.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Stop here - Converter will change your drivers of the XP which may require a re-activation.
Use ghost or acronis instead.
Add a second smaller disk - boot into ghost or acronis LiveCD and make a disk to disk clone.
After that exchange disks and remove the old one before you boot the VM again

Forgot to mention ... you must use Converter on a box which uses the same or a higher NT-version.
You can use XP as Converter host against a 2k box but not the other way round.
