converted vm does not start

Our environment contains three servers with SUSE Linux 9 running VM Ware GSX Server 3.2.1 (19281). On a WinXP Pro, SP2 PC we installed Converter 3.0.0 (39557) and tried to convert several vms from one GSX server to another.

The first conversion after installing the converter worked and the new transformed vm could also be started. Every further conversion worked also, but non of the transformed vms would start. Pressing the "Start" button on the vmware virtual machine console leads to a black window but the bios from vmware does not appear (nor appears anything else).

We thougth on permission problems, configuration issues, but we could not find any hint to this problem.

A black screen is usually indicative of file/folder permissions errors. Check that the vmx file has execute permissions, and the others have write permissions.

I have not experienced that problem but you might try removing any virtual hardware that isn't needed. Also, you could try building another VM that uses the vmdk files created by the converter.

I hope this helps.

Is there any particular reason you didn't just copy them? There should not be any need to "Convert" them at all, unless you aren't telling the whole story here.

After copying a vm from one GSX server to another, the effect is the same as after converting it: the vm does not start, the screen is black and nothing else happens.

When copying a vm to VWware Workstation 5.5.3, the vm starts as expected. Is there a bug/problem with the GSX server?
