converted XP VM fails to boot, got confused about ...

A converted copy XP fails to boot and the problem seems to be that the converter was confused by an input hard disk with many partitions. In addition, the converted VM was marked as being Linux, not Windows.

The converter was run on the machine being converted with the output VM sent to an external USB hard disk. Output is formated for VMware workstation 5 and server and was opened with VMware Server v1.0.2. Converter is v3.0 build 39557.

The error is:

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.

Could not read from the selected boot disk.

Check boot path and disk hardware.

The boot.ini file has entries for partition numbers 1,2,3 and 4. The active partition was 3. VMware reads boot ini and displays the OS list. Choosing partitions 2 and 4 result in the same error. Choosing partition number one gets XP to start booting but it then blue screens with a 7B stop error.

This was taken from another copy of XP on the same hard disk. There are three primary partitions and at any time, two of them are hidden and the third is the active bootable partition. All partitions are running Windows XP.
