Hi all,
I try to convert an physical server into an VM. I try to use a networkshare to store the new VM. But I get only 0.1 % of my gigabit network on the target server. To create a VM from a physical Server with 6 GB of disk space, I need ~ 5 hours.
My setup:
VM Ware converter Enterprise (bootCD) 3.0.2u1
HP DL380 G4 Server
HP ProCurve Gigabit Switch
I tried different configurations. But there is no difference between 100Full and auto. I configured the Switch in different ways (1000 auto, auto, 100Full) but there is no difference. Also the target Server (connected to the same Switch) can use gigabit.
My guess is, that the network driver included to the bootCD are insufficiant.
Does anyone have an idea for my problem?
Thank you in advance.
Florian
Hi fLOSt
What is the destination of your conversion - ESX or hosted (e.g. Workstation)?
Also, have you checked the transfer speed from the physical server to the share you mentioned w/o conversion? (i.e. just try to copy a large file)

you tried 1000full duplex in switch and 1000full duplex at network adapter ?

Hi,
Network share is NAS or SAN?
Prakash
Thank you for your Answer.
due to IEEE spec. there is no full or half duplex for gigabit network.
According to the manual of my ProCurve the corresponding selection for gigabit is "AUTO-1000" which I tried.
At the Converter BootCD I can choose 10 (HALF and FULL), 100 (HALF and FULL) and Auto.
I tried Auto at the BootCD and Auto1000 at the Switch.
post here the configuration of your Vswitch.

Hi Prakash,
thank you for your answer.
The share is on another server, no NAS or SAN.
Thanks again for your answer.
Here is my Configuration of the Switchport:
Type: 1000T
Enabled: YES
MODE: 1000-auto
Flow Ctrl: enabled
I tried it also with flowctrl. disabled, but no change.
no man, sorry...but i talk vSwitch (Virtual Switch) inside of Vmware.
with VI Client in table configuration > Networking
vi command line - esxcfg-vswitch -l
esxcfg-vswif -l

I´m working on physical Servers. At present, in this environment there is no VM. My Task is to create an clone of the productive system. Therefore I need to convert the physical server.
I have no access to any configuration of the BootCd exept network.
wait....confused...!!!!
you have a Vmware ESX installed ? If yes, wich version ?
i want do P2V to vmware ok ?

Hi,
You can try with vmware converter installed in any of the machine in your network
Prakash
I´m sorry for the insufficiant information. Here is my complete task:
I have a physical server which I want to clone so that I can build a virtual training environment.
I´m using VM Ware converter enterprise BootCD (version 3.0.2u1) to create the VM. I mapped a share (from another physical server) into the booted VM Ware environment . I´m trying to create the VM on the share but the performance is very bad (~ 5h for a 6 GB HDD server).
If there is any information missing for you, I can tell.
Hi Prakash,
thanks again for your answer.
I have to use the BootCD because I´m not allowed to install any pice of software on the server I need to clone. Even the creation of VM remote needs to install the vmwareconverter-agent. Therefor I´m using the BootCD because there is no installation.
I know this may sound strange but this is a key requirement and I have to fulfill it.
OK if you try do this conversion with
network working at Fast(100Mb) will be slow.
Make following:
via WebBrowser - https://VMWARESERVER
download VI CLIENT
Access your VMWARE Server with VI CLIENT
Access Table Configuration > Networking
Get a PrintScreen, and post here, maybe the configuration of network inside of vmware can be affect in this conversion(P2V)

Hi all,
shame on me!
My Network is large and contains several Switches. Not all Switches are gigabit yet.
I did something wrong as I changed from 100 to 1000. There was an slow Link between an 100 MB Switch and an GB Switch. I changed it and the speed is now better.
Thank you all for your answers.
