Windows 2000 server with SP4 fails to convert at 97%

Hi

I am facing trouble when I try to convert a Windows 2000 server with Service pack 4 using VMWare converter tool.

I tried using Cold convert by using the bootable CD, target is the ESX server 3.0.1, it all goes well, and at 97% it will give me an error saying "Unknown error" and VMWare converted failed. Find below the logs of the process. Any help would be appreciated.

Initially I tried converting by changing the partition size, later when I browse through the forum I found about the known issue of changing partition size. So I have tried leaving all the settings intact including the partition size. Still I got the same error 97%

I also went through the checking of the HKLM\Hardware.... registry keys, I dont find those keys listed on the discussion forum.

I am struck with this. Your help is really appreciated.

Regards

Ragav

Try cloning only C: drive (NO D:) and see what happens.

😧 drive is easy, since it's only data you can ghost it or make a copy of the drive.

I think he means you install VM converter on the machine you want to clone, and then run "This machine" clone.

Essentially the converter is installed either way, but maybe installing converter directly on the machine makes a bit of a difference..

I don't see how, but hey it worked!

Hi

thats right. What I exactly mean is install the VMConverter on the OS and then do a Hot cloning of "This machine"

It works perfectly. It gives the machine converted perfectly. I did 6 machines till now using this.

When I try to do a Cold clone using the boot CD....:-( it fails at 97%

So this is the only option I found

Also: this question thread is created by me... Now i found the solution by myself... so is there anyway the points can be alloted to me ? Smiley Happy

I'll add my experiences on the 97% issue.

I have VMware Converter 3.0 on a separate server. Only the agent is installed on the physical server.

Physical server is rebooted after agent install.

Destination is the Virtual Center server.

With this setup the Converter wizard do not show any networks/VLANs when choosing destination, the list is blank and "bridge" will be setting in the summery screen.

After 2 hours[/b] the transfer fails at 97% with:

I install the VMware Converter 3.0 on the physical server. I do not remove the existing agent, I just reinstall on top.

Physical server is rebooted after agent install.

Destination is the Virtual Center server.

With this setup the Converter wizard do show all networks/VLANs.

After 5 minutes[/b] the transfer fails at 97% with:

This is repeatable.

Attempt 3 - Success:[/b]

I follow the instructions on this forum to:

\- Completely uninstall the VMware converter 3.0 on the physical server

\- Reboot

\- Reinstall the full VMware converter 3.0 on the physical server

\- Reboot

Destination is the Virtual Center server.

With this setup the Converter wizard do show all networks/VLANs.

This time the transfer goes to 100% with no problems. The entire conversion takes about 2 hours.

In the log I can verify that vsnap worked (vsnap is for Win2k, vss is for win2k3):

\[#2] \[2007-03-27 14:28:16.090 'App' 592 verbose] \[snapshotVolumeFactory,149] Creating snapshot using vss

\[#2] \[2007-03-27 14:28:16.090 'App' 592 warning] \[snapshotVolumeFactory,120] Shapshot creation failed. driver=vss

\[#2] \[2007-03-27 14:28:16.090 'App' 592 verbose] \[snapshotVolumeFactory,149] Creating snapshot using vsnap

\[#2] \[2007-03-27 14:28:16.090 'App' 592 verbose] \[snapshotVolumeVSNAPWin32,124] Vsnap does have[/b] admin rights

So it seems that the vsnap service was not successfully installed in attempt 2 (where the agent had been remotely installed first). A complete reinstall of VMware Converter 3.0 on the physical server solved that problem.

Edit:

I can add that all conversion attempts (failed and successful), where done when logged in via terminal services on the physical server (win2k)
