Why does Converter insist on pre-allocating disk space for machines going to "managed destinations"?

If I try to convert a machine from VMWare Fusion 2.0.x to a VMWare Infrastructure machine, the type option under "Copy all disks and maintain layout" is summarily set to "Flat" and there is no pop-up menu available to change it. So if I am starting out with an unfilled non-pre-allocated disk, Converter will pre-allocate it for me, the space is lost, and that's the end of it. :_|

Interestingly, if I were to choose VMWare workstation as the destination, then I do get the popup menu. It doesn't appear to be a bug since it's referenced in the Converter manual on page 43: "For managed destinations, the only option allowed is Flat."

What's up with this and is there a workaround?

Currently ESX does not support sparse virtual disks. It may come in later versions.
