Virtual Server to vSphere conversion

Hi there,

I'd like some advice, I've been trying to find information on converting from MS Virtual Server 2k5 R2 to vSphere using the VMware converter, can anyone point me in the right direction.

Particular things I'm concerned about is handling things like th "Virtual server tools" and the CPU hardware moving from MS VS to vSphere. I'm going to do some tests but I presume on the MS VS I'd need to uninstall the VS tools as a start and then run the VMware convertered tool.

Should it be a hot clone/cold clone?

Many thanks,

you did not mention which OS you are talking about - so I can't tell what is the shortest way.

Win 7 and Win 2008 are very easy to move.

Older OS are more tricky

Thanks for your reply sorry I missed that part. Actually I was looking to convert some Win2k3 SP2 VMs (with 1CPU)servers from MS Virtual Server 2005 R2 to vSphere 4.0 U1.

What I was thinking was;

uninstall the MS VS Tools

perform P2V using cold clone (is that right)

perform a cleanup of all the ghost devices

add 2nd CPU to vSphere VM's

Cheers

thats a reasonable plan - not the shortest road but a reliable one - proceed as planned
