VMware converter

Hello All,

I am trying to V2V a win3k VM from my 2.x enviroment to my 3.x enviroment. In the screen that asks for the log in info for ESX or VC server that contains the VM i get the following error.

The managed host was actually running ESX 2.x, rahter than 3.x or VC. Please help

Which version of virtual center is managing the ESX 2.5.2 host?

It would probably be quicker to SCP from ESX 2 to ESX 3.

see if http://kb.vmware.com/kb/900 gives you any ideas

converter doesn't support connecting directly to an ESX 2.5.x host.

If you have virtual center 2.x and add the ESX 2.5.x host to it, you should be able to convert when pointing to virtualcenter as the source.

Do you actually want to make a copy of the Windows 2003 Server, or just move the files from ESX 2 to ESX 3? There are methods mentioned in our upgrade guide:

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35/vi3_35_25_upgrade_guide.pdf

you should just be able to SCP the vmdk files from one host to the other, and then make a new VM with the existing VMDKs.

Thank you for your reply. I want to move it from my 2.x enviroment to my 3.02 enviroment. My ESX 2.5.2 server is connected to Virtual center , but it's not letting me.

Again thank you for your quick reponses!!!! VC 1.4, As you stated earlier i am trying to WINSCP the vmdk file and i will if that works. I was not aware i could not use converter on ESX 2.x. my worry is that in the near future i will be building a new 3.5 enviroment to replace my current 2.5.4 enviroment (diferent SAN's) and i was hoping i would be able to use Converter to migrate 50 VM's over.

will your ESX 3.5 Environment Include VC 2.5? If so, you can add the ESX 2.5.x hosts to VC 2.5 and be able to use VC to migrate the storage locations.

If you don't have VC 2.5, you'll need to SCP.
