Hi
I have yet to have a successful import using the beta. I am trying to migrate from WS 5.5 to 4.5. Host OS is 32-bit Windows 2003 R2. Guests are held on a FAT32 partition for compatbility with Linux. The import start and fails with the screen sayng cannot import. Guests have snapshots.
Any ideas?
Dave
Update move to NTFS with snapshots, gives an error saying it cannot determine GuestOS. Remove snapshots and works.
However, I have the original as a 2Gb split sparse disk, and the new one is flat sparse disk. Should it not preserve te disk type on a full clone?
Dave
Hi Dave,
It is possible to change the sparseness of created disks via the "Allocate all disk space now" checkbox on the Virtual Machine Options page. However, the beta version of VM Importer provides no way to create 2GB split disks. This ability will likely be added before the next release.
Hi
Thanks for the update. When the 2Gb option is in place will that fix the FAT32 problem? Also don't forget it won't work when the source machine has a snapshot.
Dave
Hi Dave,
The 2GB option will only affect the types of disks that can be created. VM Importer already supports reading from 2GB split disks.
The errors you are getting are very strange. We do support importing VMs with snapshots, so it is disturbing that your import succeeded after the snapshots were removed. There also should not be any problem reading VMs from a FAT32 partition. Would you post the error logs for some of the failed cases? Alternatively, you could email them to vmi2-betafeedback@vmware.com
Will send you some logs. However, won't be until Monday when I am back in the office.
Dave
Would you be able to post the logs of your import? You can also email them to vmi2-betafeedback@vmware.com if you prefer.
Thanks!
