I am trying to convert a Dell 2850 Raid 5 Server into my virtual environment using VMware converter standalone version 4.01. I am running ESXi 4.0 with vCenter Server. The OS is Windows 2008 std SP1 that was upgraded from Windows Server 2003. This is actually the case for over 90 percent of my servers.
Below is the configuration of my Windows Boot Manager and Windows Boot Loader and my partitions. My physical and logical disk configuration is such that there is a Dell OEM partition in from of my system partition.
When I do the P2V it goes well for 95%, then fails “unable to find system volume – reconfiguration is not possible”. Through my investigation I found 2 things. In Windows server 2003 this was an edit of the boot.ini file that is now the Windows Boot Manager and Windows Boot Loader files. It seems that this version of converter was supposed to support this function. I have tried the advance setting in the converter view/edit options “data copy type” that did not help. I also am resizing my c:\ partition from 96GB to 25GB as only 17GB is used currently.
I have been to Microsoft’s documentation about bcdedit and am not clear as to what impact it would have with relationship to the mbr and changing the “device” setting in the “Windows Boot Manager” which I believe is the answer to my problem.
I believe I am on the edge of figuring this out, I might even have all correct information, but I need help assimilating it into a process.
What is the key I am missing, or not understanding? Can anyone help out?
If needed I also have Paragon WinPE for Server 2008 if that would help.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Geobrasil
did you try with a 2008 recovery CD and fix the bcd-store ?
I would suggest breaking it up in single steps.
Do the imaging with whatever procedure you prefer - like ghost32 or Acronis or vdiskmanager or Converter or Paragon
Then fix bcd-store with recovery CD
Then run Converter "configure machine" again - if necessary

I have defined my problem to a finite situation. After investigation, I find that who ever configured the server made the c:\ partition the boot partition, and the d:\ partition the system active partition. Just simply making the c:\ partition active does not work as I recieve the error bootmgr not found. So I need a way to edit the boot manager file that makes my c:\ partition my active system partition. This is server 2008 and nothing else will matter. I have tried Paragon to make it active, but then again I get the same error msg. bootmgr not found when booting machine virtiual or physical. I am converting only the c:\ partitions of any of my servers because I am putting the storage or d:\ partitions on SAN.
Thanks
Geobrasil
download a 2008 recovery CD
it comes with "fix boot ..." as an option - see screenshot

Comtinuum,
I have searched and can not find anything called a server 2008 recovery cd. Is it part of an admin pak? Do you have a link?
Thanks
Geobrasil
I am looking into the other link you already sent, Thanks
strange - when I google for "2008 recovery CD" I find several good links.
look out for links from neosmart.com like this for example
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
also if you have another working 2008 VM it has a function to create such a CD
AFAIK the regular Install DVD also has this functionality build-in
