Please help - Unable to convert while power on, but not actually on

Please help:

I am trying to convert a VMWare Server 1.0.1 VM to an ESX 3.5 VM. The VM has been safely turned off but I am still getting the message "unable to convert a virtual machine while it is powered on or suspended. Shut down or power off the virtual machine before converting it."

I has started it back up and shut it back down again with the same results. Please help.

Sincerely,

Kevin Littrell

Are there any .lck files in the VM's folder? Try removing them and running the conversion again.

Or lock subfolders.

I also ran into this problem VMWare converter 3.0.3 build 89816 trying to convert a

Windows XP sp 2 machine that was fully updated with all microsoft patches current to July 14, 2008.

The machine was originally created on: Virtual Server 1.0.4 build 56528 for windows XP.

VMTools were installed on the guest OS.

The error read:

"Unable to convert a virtual machine while it is powered on or suspended. Shut down or power off the virtual machine before converting it"

I restarted the virtual machine and then powered it down from inside the OS, but that did not resolve the error.

SOLUTION: It appears that using snapshots caused the error.

I powered up the virtual machine and took a current snapshot.

Then powered down and in virtual server, set to disable snapshots.

Now the machine can be converted to add to a VI3 server.
