P2V windows 2008 server (64 Bit) failed

<![endif]><![if gte mso 9]>

Hi all,

We are trying to P2V a windows 2008 server R2 64 Bit but get the following error message:

FAILED: Unable to create a VSS

snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code:

2147754754 (0x80042302).

We have tried are using standalone on a 2003 server (32Bit) also on a 2008 server R2 64 . Any clues?

Not sure if the 64 Bit is a red herring...

Cheers

Hello,

What version of ESX are you trying this? Also consider this below article. And when do you get this error message?

Aravind K,

We are using ESX 3.5.0, 130756 (yep, I know we need to upgrade).

Standalone converter 4.0.1 161434

We follow the wizard which completes fine.

The converter creates the new VM on the host then after around 15 seconds errors with the above message.

Had a look at the link but it we dont even get as far as a working VM.

Cheers

Malca,

Is there required space in the storage for the VM to boot. Also give it a try again by disabling the Windows VSS service. Somemore inputs in the link below

Hi Aravind K,

Still no joy with this one.

VSS is working fine, took a back up OK.

When I tried the converter again I clicked the verify details link and it couldnt tell me what the OS was...

The information on the right hand side mentions several OSs including 2008, but not R2

I have Micrsoft looking at the problem now.

Hi Aravind K,

From the link below it appears that 2008 server R2 cannot be P2Ved, at least not in version 4.01:

http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv401.html#guestos

A possible work around is to use the method on this link::

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx

Its a long way round but it may do the job.

Thanks for your help

Cheers

creating the diskimage is the easy part of the job - patching the drivers is the tricky part and if I read the description of the tool correct it does not do this.

It can patch drivers to use IDE on VirtualPC - but if you need SCSI for a ESX target that will not help you

I have found a way to do this for free. Just download Symantec's Backup Exec System Recovery software and take a backup of the server. Then you can either use their built in tool to convert it or you can use converter to P2V the server. I have 3 R2 servers that I have been trying to convert with the same results that you had. I downloaded the 60 day trial of BESR and it has worked every time.

Another approach use disk2vhd from Sysinternals and V2V-converter from Starwind
