Fatal Error when trying to convert windows 2003 server to vm

Hello,

I've used vmware converter in the past and has worked as expected. I'm working on converting one of my existing 2003 servers to a vm to be imported to one of our VM servers. I'm receiving the following error right after I specify the destination of the vm image : fatal error occurred. the most common reason for this loss of network connection. the wizard will now close.

I'm using the latest vmware converter app, and using w2k3 as the source which has One drive partition into 3 separate drives. I've tried reinstalling the converted tool with no luck, at one point the previous version of the tool was used to create a p2v image of this server which worked.

I will post the log shortly but would like to see if anyone has had a similar issue.

Thanks

Cuco

Hi elcuco,

The RPC error in the log usually suggests connectivity issues as you rightly say.

How are the converter machine and the target machine physically connected? Across a switch? Are the ports and cards set to the same speed/duplex settings? Can you try with a crossover cable to rule out physical network connectivity issues?

Do you have name resolution to the target server? Can you ping my hostname and fqdn?

Is the target running windows firewall?

Hello Dan.

The physical and destination machine are connected within the same Vlan, they can ping each other via IP / FQDN. I've tested the converter from a different w2k3 server on the same vlan to the same destinatinon and the tool does not error out on me.

Its really just specifically with this current server i'm working on, there's nothing different apart from the server running sql server 2005.

Hi again,

There are few posts on these forums regarding this kind of error - what sort of hardware is the server you are trying to P2V? Is there any hardware unique to this server that wasn't present on the server you successfully P2V'd? DRAC / iLO devices are often to blame - you could try disabling these in Device Manager.

Did you disable the windows firewall? What about if you queisce SQL?

No difference in hardware from the last time it was P2V'd. The only thought i have right now is to stop sqlserver and try to convert again. The other posts with the same error dont really have any resolutions to the problem unless i didnt dig the correct posts Smiley Happy

Thanks

The latest log using the previous version of the vmware converter with the same result. I've also tested this on another server running sqlserver and I was able to go through the whole convert routine.
