Failed to Start VM after P2V Windows XP into ESXi 4 using vConverter Stand Alone 4

Hi All,

I've got a problem in converting my Existing Desktop into a Virtual Machine on ESXi 4.

it is a HP dx 7400 SFF which ahs got IDE-SATA II Hard Disk Drive, I've successfully run the batch convert process in vConverter with everything left as a default, the problem started to rise when the Hard Drive in the VM is not recognizeddue to the controller used is IDE instead of SCSI using LSI Logic SAS or parallel.

is there any way to convert a Windows XP Pro 32 bit desktop into a VM please ?

I've right click the newly created entry in my ESXi 4 vSphere client console to "Upgrade" the hardware hoping that the IDE would turn become SCSI but still no solution. the Console still blank without any sign of life just a blinking cursor.

ESX4 support also IDE disks. And usally Converver with install the right drivers.

So seems to be not a problem with disk.

How have you done the conversion?

Yes Andre, actually I've done twice with the same result 😐 (it is always success to convert with no error), DVD-ROM Drive and Hard Disk Drive are all SATA-II

and now I'm at the stage of installing the latest vConveter 4.0.0 but I got the following error:

Error 29142.Could not start service Vstor2 MntApi 1.0 Driver

Are you using Converter inside the source machine?

Have you tried also with the 3.0.3 version?

Have you removed the CD driver from the VM? (cause SATA virtual CD aren't supported in VM)

Andre, no I haven't I shall give it a try. and here is the background of the hardware specs of the HP dx 7400 SFF workstation that I'd like to convert now:

Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.33 GHz

4 GB DDR2- SDRAM 667 MHz

WDC 160 GB SATA-II HDD

Samsung OEM DVD-RW SATA-II Drive

Running Windows XP Pro. 32 bit.

I'm now able to install the vCenter Converter Stand Alone 4.0.1 (VMware-converter-4.0.1-161434.exe) without

any error after Uninstall and perform registry clean and then

restarting my management server.

I have the same issue with migration of HP/Compaq EVO D510 small form factor and another HP D510 Ultra slim desktops one with XpPro SP3 and the latter with Windows 2003 Std 32bit.

The Converter work great and goes all the way through and I try and boot the Vm but it does the BIOS load and then just hangs with the cursor in the top left corner of sreen.

I have tried to remove the CD-rom but that does not make a difference.

Please help any body.

FYI I have read over this KB but it seems a bit much. KB Article: 1006296 Cannot boot or start the resulting virtual machine

I have done the fixmbr, fixboot, chkdsk c:/ p and bootcfg /rebuild and still nothing.

ntldr looks good. in root dir.

Common hardware in both machaines.

Intel P4 1.7Ghz

Intel 845 Chipset. with intel UATA disk controller.

I see in the original OS load 1 CPU as a "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" in device manager.

I used VM ahrdware verison 7 for all the test so far going to test version 4 since that does not have IDE in it..

And how many vCPU do you have in the VM?

Have you tried also with vCenter Standalone Converter 3.0.3? (launched from the XP physical machine)

I got it to work.

select the hardware version for the VM to be 4 and NOT 7

Hi All,

Somehow my VM conversion process worked, i use vConverter 4 standalone and then select the hard drive controller to use Buslogic Parallel and VMhardware i still select the latest (7).

None of the above solutions have worked for me. I have removed the cdrom drive. No luck. Still just a cursor in the console when I try to power it on. Any other ideas?

So during the conversion wizard when you build the VM guest host hardware did you select version 4 in the hardware or did you try change it once it was already converted.

I had to do it in the wizrd and convert it again with hardware version 4 to get it to work.

Actually, I just got it to work. Works just fine using hardware version 7. I had originally left the hard drive controller setting at "Preserve Source". This must be changed to SCSI when converting an XP machine to a VM on an ESX4 host.
