FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

While converting a Server 2003 server to an ESX 3.5 server I received this message after 95% Complete. Error Reconfiguration failed. With a status of: FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

I'm using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1

Anyone run into to this problem and find a solution?

Attached is the Log file.

I had the same problem. The machine that I converted had a system partition that I didn't migrate.

I edited the boot.ini file and changed the partition number that the OS was on.

The origional was something like

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2003 SP2 Standard Server" /fastdetect

And modified it to

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2003 SP2 Standard Server" /fastdetect

This fixed the problem

Thanks,

trying to convert a windows 7 machine physical to virtual, using the standalone converter, version 4

i get an error about a boot.ini

its supposed to be able to convert w7 right? w7 doesnt use boot.ini..

Unable to update boot.ini on the destination machines system volume

And also,

Unable to update drive letters for the destination volume layout

those are the two errors i get, fail at 98%

been at this for about 2 days solid.. Smiley Sad

any guidance would be appreciated...

edit: i also tried the migration assistant over the network, that failed too..

if you get as far as 98% the tricky part is done

you could do the rest yourself with a win7 recovery CD - read my notes http://sanbarrow.com/p2v2008r2.html

Patching - easy variant

This procedure is used when otherwise the VM would boot into a bluescreen              type 7B.
This assumes that VMware is the target and you configure the VM with              VirtualHardware type 7.
It only applies if the virtual disk is configured like this
scsi0.virtualDev = "lsisas1068"
scsi0:0.fileName = "imported.vmdk"

On the target platform boot the newly created VM into the Windows              7 Recovery CD.
After boot is finished click on the CMD-button and run regedit.
Select HKLM and then Menu > File > Load Hive.
Browse to the Windows-directory on the virtualdisk > system32\config              and select the file SYSTEM.
When asked for a name enter p2v.
Then find the key

HKLM\p2v\ControlSet001\services\LSI_SAS

and set the start type to REG_DWORD 0
Then select HKLM\p2v and click Menu > File > Unload Hive.
You can close regedit now and restart.
On next boot you can start into the 2008 R2/ Windows 7 system. It should find              drivers and probably needs a reboot when done.

Hmm - looks like thte original is a XP/Vista Dualboot system ?

anyway - replace your vmx-file with the one I attached.
Then open Converter and try the option "configure machine" against the newly created VM

(you misconfigured the task and allowed Converter to keep the IDE-controller which will not work.
With XP you must order Buslogic controller.

If you want our help it would be clever to attach files in a common format - txt as. txt, images as .pg or .png and so on

Useful data:
the vmx-file
the boot.ini
a screenshot of diskmanagement

Unregister the VM and then exchange the existing vmx-file with the attached one and re-register it.

Do not start the VM !
open Converter , select "configure machine" and then select the VM you just registered

Can you boot the VM into a LiveCD and report what the disk looks like ?

Do you have an active partition that has

ntldr
ntdetect.com
boot.ini
Windows-directory

is that partition active ? - check with fdisk or gparted

if yes - its time for plan B: use a BartPE with the tool DriverInjectionGUI - I have explained how to use that a couple of times - serach for "DriverInjectionGUI" in the search box of this Converter forum - it has several posts
