FAILED: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume(s). Error code: 2147754758 (0x80042306)

I see this issue going on for years, and for me it is still relevant for me using versions 6.1.1 and 6.2.

I want to convert a pair of Windows 2012 R2 servers to get a test environment in Workstation.

There are one domain controller and one member server.

I can't P2V any of them. All attempts has resulted in Error code: 2147754758 (0x80042306) within 2 minutes.

I only want to convert the system drives, and they has this layout:

Grey: 300 MB

Red:   99 MB

Yellow: 185 GB 50% free NTFS

(In version 6.2 there is an additional partition at 127 MB showing a question mark icon)

There are data drives attached to the servers as well, but I do not want to virtualize those.

In the settings before hitting the Finish button I changed as follows, to adapt to the hardware running VMware Workstation:

RAM 512 GB -> 8 GB

CPU 2x10 cores +HT -> 1x2 cores

After each converting attempt, the VSS service stops, as do the Microsoft Software Shadow Service Provider service.

In the converter logs I can't find much useful - perhaps I need guidance in what to look for besides the word "Error".

In the Windows System Event Log, I found this of interest, but I do not know how to proceed from here.

Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.

The error is VSS_E_PROVIDER_VETO - "The provider has encountered an internal run-time error that does not map to another return value. The provider must also write an event into the Application event log providing the user with information on how to resolve this problem.", so you can use it for purposefully search.

Also check the VSS configurations with "vssadmin.exe" command - in elevated prompt check the storage limitations with vssadmin list shadowstorage.

Hi POCEH,

I found only one more entry in eventlog, it was information only, not warning or error.

Information:

- Provider

   [ Name]  Service Control Manager

   - EventID 7036

The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the stopped state.

I ran a vssadmin list shadowstorage, giving the result below.

Is that enough room, or how to decide how much room to set aside?

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 608 MB (0%)

Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 945 MB (0%)

Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 18,6 GB (10%)

For me seems enough but ... Smiley Happy

From your first message there is a volume \\?\Volume{78721650-e8f1-462c-93fd-72366f100c69} mentioned in error, check the state of this volume with vssadmin list shadows & vssadmin list shadowstorage

Also check if there is other VSS provider - vssadmin list providers, if more that one exists it is possible to need to repair "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0"

HTH

P.S.

Converter 6.2 shows and allows to keep Microsoft Reserved Partition on disk(s), this is partition with question mark in your view.

Hi RajeevVCP4,

The errorcode on the page is different than the one I get, yet the symptoms are the same.

I did not see any solutions to my problem, the closest thing I could find was the paragraph about FAT partitions.

The closest thing to FAT on this machine, is the FAT32 system partition.

I have a similar partition on a Server 2016 box, that converted smoothly

Volume ###  Ltr  Label        Fs     Type        Size     Status     Info

  ----------  ---  -----------  -----  ----------  -------  ---------  --------

Volume 1     C   OS           NTFS   Partition    185 GB  Healthy    Boot

Volume 2         Recovery     NTFS   Partition    300 MB  Healthy    Hidden

Volume 3                           FAT32  Partition     99 MB  Healthy    System

I could suspect the VSS to be part of the problem, but is it caused by VSS it self, or because of nonstandard use of its interface?

One of the articles I read about this problem, suggested to downgrade one version. I tried, but had no luck with that.

The drive ending with ...00c69 is a 300 MB service partition

I see two service providers, but they are both Microsoft. Does that count at two, and requires?

If so, how to repair?

Commands answers as below:

Seems very strange to have 2 version of MS VSS providers. Is this result from "downgrade"? If so (or not) - remove older provider. I've no idea which one is selected in function call to CreateVssBackupComponents.

Also - if you have similar box - just compare VSS settings?...

Also - just deselect Recovery Partition and try again. (it's better to convert without it Smiley Happy)

Finally - a wild idea - sometimes volumes are too small for snapshots, try to extend to ~500MB.

I have working VM's now.

What I did was:

- Removed older provider

- Deselected the Recovery Partition.

I am not sure if both were needed to complete the P2V conversion, but it works now.

Thank you for the input.

Almost 3 years have passed since I made P2V conversions. Wonder if there are still some who listen to this thread?

There have surfaced so many differences between my virtual test machines and the physical servers that a new set of virtual ones is needed.

I follow the recipe from last:

 - Only one vssadmin provider

- Deselected the recovery partition.

Still, I get exactly the same errors as almost 3 years ago.

The servers are in a closed network, and have not received significantly many updates since 2018. Still running 2012 R2. Only a few updates required by the main application are installed.

However, my service workstation is renewed from Win7 to Win10.

Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.
