Here is the setup ...
I have an Ubuntu VM's (Ubuntu 18.04 ) on a host called QNAS, that claims to be a VMDK format , we are trying to get our box off this host onto our new vSphere 6.5
When I ty to convert one of the VM it goes to the end and then returns:
FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'GrubInstaller::InstallGrub: /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installGrub.sh failed with return code: 127, and message: FATAL: kernel too old Error running vmware-updateGrub.sh through chroot into /mnt/p2v-src-root Command:
chroot "/mnt/p2v-src-root" /vmware-updateGrub.sh "GRUB2" "(hd0)" "(hd0,1)" /vmware-device.map "grub2-install" '
Can anyone help me with this issue or have suggestions. I tried to manually move the VMDK form this host but VMware says if does nto recognize the VMDK format. QNAS point fingers at VMware of course.
Much obliged!
Lets check which type of vmdk you have.
Is it a one piece file or does it come with a text-descriptor file ?
If possible post the result of
hexdump -C unidentified-vmdk | less
the first few lines of the output are enough.
If there is descriptor.vmdk - attach it to your next reply.
Any resolution on this issue? Currently running into the same problem
Thanks.

Does VMware converter support the Ubuntu 20.10 OS ?
Google says technically "no": https://docs.vmware.com/en/vCenter-Converter-Standalone/6.2/com.vmware.convsa.guide/GUID-088E735A-CB...
I am receiving this same error when using the converter to virtualize an OpenSUSE 15.1 x64 physical. I was asked to virtualize 10 of these same physical devices. Is there any workaround to this at all? The converter fails at 98% but when I attempt to power the virtual that gets created up, it doesn't recognize the disk. I tried to use the converter to "Reconfigure" the VM, but it says that it's not an option for the guest selected. Is there anything I can do with the VM that gets created and fails at 98% to get it up and running? Thanks for your assistance.
