Hi,
we are trying to use VMware Converter with our Windows Server, but after 4% of converting it stops and deletes the VM.
In the Logfile found this
VmiImportTask::task step "Clone VM" 4% completed
Got an update from BlockLevelVolumeCloning::task Waiting for updates from CloneTask::task (Re)Start waiting for property updates from CloneTask::task Waiting for updates from BlockLevelVolumeCloning::task
(Re)Start waiting for property updates from BlockLevelVolumeCloning::task Got an update from CloneTask::task Waiting for updates from CloneTask::task (Re)Start waiting for property updates from CloneTask::task Error 23 reading 65536 bytes starting from 6580457472 from the source volume BlockLevelVolumeCloning::task: Image processing task has failed with PlatformError fault: 23
BlockLevelVolumeCloning::task: SetState to error
How can we virtualize this server?
...
Make sure the following ports are open: 443 and 902.
Full documentation can be found here : http://www.vmware.com/pdf/VMware_Converter_manual301.pdf
1) What is the OS of the operating system?
2) Are you doing a remote conversion or local conversion?
3) Are you logged in as local admin or domain admin?
4) Are you sending this to ESX or VC? then to SAN? local storage?
Suggestions:
1) Log onto physical box as local admin
2) Download and install VMware converter on physical box
3) Run VMware Converter
If this still fails, please get the logs from File -> Export Logs and attach the logs
This problem (Error 23 reading 65536 bytes starting from 6580457472 from the source volume) means that you have bad sectors on the source Run chkdsk /r and try again.
We did a chkdsk /r but it does not help, same problem.
A Log File is attached on my first post.
...
Did you reboot after your chkdsk /r so it ran on startup?
I think mkagzi hit on it. We had similar problems here with Converter, and the only pattern I noticed was that my host server (the one running Converter) was 2003, whereas my source server (the one being converted) was running 2000. I ended up booting with the Converter Boot CD, and the entire process ran smoothly from there. I think it had something to do with the host server trying to engage VSS on the source server, but since the source server was 2000, it doesn't have VSS, and therefore failed.
I remember "back in the days" when you had to have separate VMs with NT, 2000, and 2003 to run the old P2V software properly. Perhaps this is a similar issue?
In any case, the boot CD worked great, and I think actually ended up being a bit faster than doing it via our host server.

How do you get the Converter Boot CD? I am having a a similar problem, it fails at 2%.

The Converter Enterprise disc is available to people who have a licensed version of VMware Converter Enterprise.
I would suggest upgrading to 3.0.3 if you haven't already, since it should be resolved there:
http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv303.html#resolved
Hot clone of Windows operating system fails with Platform Error fault 23. Release 3.0.3 corrects this problem
Also, can you post a new question to a new thread, and attach the log file to the post? That way people can be awarded points accordingly for helping out.
It is currently running 3.0.3, and it doesn't appear to fix the problem. Are there any other suggestions for converting. I seem to have a ton of problems trying to convert any of my webservers. They all fail at some point during the converting process. Sometimes at 97% sometimes at 2%...
