Disk Creation Fails - After a day

Hi !

I am having trouble converting a physical Windows 2000 Server with SQL 2000 to a virtual machine.

When starting the converter it will hang at 1% Completion, the target disk drive is is busy an the vmdk files are growing in size - but after a day or two the operation stops with the following error :

Checking the disk now, shows that the target disk drive only contains some kb of data.

Is this a problem with the external Disk Drive I'm using ? (usb-to-sata2 external HardDiskDrive), perhaps a problem with a running SQL Server on the Source Machine ?

Any hints appreciated

Flo

Why do you try to hotclone a SQL server ?

Do you expect to get a consistent disk after such a long time - you didn't even stop the SQL-server ...

Use ghost or the coldclone CD instead

just my 2 Pfennigs

any data passed to sql between the point you start converter and the point where it finishes will be lost in your new VM

your log file is incomplete - there is essential data that was not included.

you may need to stop sql if you believe it may be locking the volume. Same goes for any antivirus or backup agents running on the physical

hi

I will have another go an that machine tonight - hopefully stopping the SQl Server will help me get this machine to virtual.

If not i will go for a DD and configure my own VM-config file

Hi !

Just letting you know it worked with the SQL Server being stopped.

The Conversion Process took 10 hours for 110GB.

Booting the machine in my VMWare Server right now - somehow hangs while readying network connections, but that shouldn't be a big problem to solve i hope Smiley Wink
