Hello, I have upgraded to VSphere and in the process also upgraded to the latest VMWare Converter plugin.
The deal is that I want to convert an existing Windows 7 machine to regular VMWare format so a user can access it from their desktop using VMPlayer and for that I tried to convert the machine to VMWARE server/workstation format that to my understanding should be compatible.
However, the converter plugin refuses to proceed but throws an "Unknown Guest OS" error which I find peculiar since I have updated to the latest converter plugin and it seems like it is not supported yet?
Windows 7 seems to be supported by VMWare workstation so in worst case, it is possible to create a similar Windows 7 machine without purchasing a Workstation license?
You can download VMware Workstation and try it for 30 days.

converter does not support Windows 7 as a source OS, so your option is to install it from scratch either in Workstation or within vSphere.

I use Paragon Virtualisation Manager 10 - thats not a free product - you have to buy it for 30 or 40 bucks - but it comes with a LiveCD that is worth every cent.
And it works with Windows 7.
Sorry - I hate to recommend non free ware but this is worth an exception
If you want to do this manually see my notes on how to P2V win 2008 R2 - you should be able to use the same procedure
