Hey,
I need help with converting physical machine (linux opensuse 11) to virtual machine on vmware server 2.0.2. I'm trying to do this using Vmware Standalone Converter 4.0.1. I've got problem specifying destination. When I write ip of machine where physical machine will be moved (ip of machine where is installed vmware server) I'm getting the following error: "Unable to recognize the server type or version when connecting to the host". Do you know what is wrong?
If converting Linux your destination has to be ESX(i) 4.x +. You cannot have your destination be VMware Server
Hm... so how can I convert my physical machine? Is there any possibilty to convert or make virtual image from physical machine not using esx?
I don't know... Converter 5.0 will alllow for hot conversions of Linux, but again the destination needs to be a managed infrastructure, not a hosted one
I've read some information about converting virtual machines. I also see documentation of VMware server converter standalone 5.0. There is some about selecting hosted destination. Is it possible to give a directory as a host? I tried to give directory but I've got errors. Do you know how this directory should look?
There is a statement in documentation that we can give a network path as a destination directory.
"If you are connected to a remote Converter Standalone server, provide a network path to the
destination directory. For example, \\server\virtual_machines\."
There is also image http://www.vmware.com/files/images/diagrams/vmw_vC_converter_600x600.jpg on vmware website, where we can see that there is possibilty to convert physical machine to vmware server...
Converter treats VMware Server as hosted destination, i.e. the same way as Workstation. You should provide a directory path (local or network). Converting live Linux machines can't have a hosted destination, only managed, i.e. vCenter Server or ESX.
