Converting C: & D: partitions to separate LUNs?

Am new to VM so your patience would be appreciated. Four days of VM configuration classes in June and now I'm trying to do a rollout. Could use some friendly advice from those with more experience...

The physical servers I am converting all have a single disk array (most are RAID 0, and two are RAID 5). In all instances, the C: drive is simply a 15 to 20 Gig partition of the array and the 😧 drive partition occupies the remainder of the array. All servers are Win2003 (SP1 or SP2).

The rollout plan calls for storing configuration and OS drives (C:) in one "OS" LUN and the data drives (D:) on a separate "data" LUN of the SAN. There are two ESX servers. We have the 3.01 Enterprise Edition of VMware.

I've been able to get a few machines converted by converting the C: and 😧 drives separately and later combining them to a single virtual machine. Then once all seems correct, I use the migrate function to get all the files named consistently within their appropriate folders within their vmfs folders. This process works (sort of) but is clumsy to say the least.

My process requires that multiple copies of the large data areas exist during conversion and quite frankly, I'm going to run out of room to manipulate them prior to completing this process if I continue with this madness! Smiley Happy

I'm asking if there is a simpler way to accomplish this?

TIA for any help.

Unfortunately thats the only way you can do it right now, hopefully they will add the ability to but different drives on different LUNs in a future release. Another option would be to just create a new drive on the other LUN and then use Microsoft Robocopy to copy all the data over to the new drive.
