Converter version?

VMware vCenter Converter 3.0.3 Build 89816 is listed in http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/

There is another version of Converter 4.0.2 u3 is listed in the download page under vCenter Server 2.5 update 3.

Are they the same besides the version number? I'm assuming that 4.0.2 is the latest Converter. Thanks.

The 4.0.2 you see is the VMware Converter Enterprise plugin for vCenter.

Stand Alone:

Hope this helps

Newest Converter is 4 beta

Oldest version you mentioned is 4.0.2

Version 3.0.3 is somewhere in the middle ...

Logical version-numbers ? ..... well thats a matter of taste :smileycool:

Productions versions can be compared via BUILD number in the logs. Yes, there is confusion about which is where and what features are contained in a specific one .... here are some examples ... in build order:

Log for VMware Converter Enterprise Client, pid=3688, version=4.0.0, build=build-62386, option=Release, section=2

Log for VMware Converter Agent, pid=4092, version=3.0.2u1, build=build-62456, option=Release, section=1

Log for VMware Converter Agent, pid=4092, version=3.0.3, build=build-89816, option=Release, section=1

Log for VMware Converter Enterprise Client, pid=6088, version=4.0.1, build=build-103517, option=Release, section=2

Log for VMware Converter, pid=5436, version=e.x.p, build=build-108518, option=BETA, section=2

Does that help?

If I understand correctly, the build number is what we need to look at in this case and that places 4.0.2 somewhere in between 3.0.2 update 1 and 3.0.3. Correct?

Thanks.

Log for VMware Converter Enterprise Client, pid=3812, version=4.0.2, build=build-119746, option=Release, section=2

please note that I deleted 4.0 beta from the mix because it's considered a different product. the plugin 4.0.x and standalone 3.0.x are of a same/similar build tree.

also, you MUST look in the logs to get the build number ... the build number in the release notes is the whole package build number.

The VCu3 download page states: "...which includes vCenter Server 2.5 Update 3 (build 119598) and its sub-components (including VMware vCenter Update Manager (build 63985), VMware vCenter Converter (build 62407)..."

So are you saying the 62407 is the plugin build only and not the actual program version?

Thanks.

vCenter Converter (build 62407)

This is the total package, including the enterprise server etc ....

To compare apples to apples, which would be the agent installed on the system being converted, you need to look at the logs files from that system.

OK. My team has been on the phone with VM support and getting nowhere quick. We run VCS 2.5build 4. We are trying to do a convert on a 32bit 2008 vmdk...Does the converter that comes with VCS2.5 build4 ( 4.0.2 build 119746) have support for 2008 guestos? Or do I need to run with the standalone vmconverter.exe 4.0 (which claims it supports 2008 guestos)?

ANY help or direction would be greatly appreciated....and yes, we're getting the ntldr on converts....

You'll need 4.0.0 Standalone .... the vCenter plugin is based on 3.0.x and doesn't support 2008 (any version)

VMware Converter 3.0.3 does not support converting a Linux Operating System. If you are interested, VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0 was recently released and does support converting Linux physical systems.

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0

Latest Version: 4.0 | 2009/02/12 | Build: 146302

Download: http://www.vmware.com/go/getconverter

Support List: http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/releasenotes_conv40.html#guestos

PS, this should have been a new thread.

Agreed, it should have been in it's own thread. I tagged this one b/c (based on what I can see), you seem to have a pretty good handle on what's real...and what's not. This was/is time sensitive...no excuse, though...
