The server has plenty of space left on all volumes. Different versions of the cnvert have been tried on different drives.
The problem seems to revolve around a VSS copy that is kicked of my the convertor. The application event log shows event MSExchangeIS event ID 9607 - Error code 0x50d when preparing for backup. This happens even after the box has just been rebooted, so I know there have been no other backups that can be interfering.
The server OS is 2003 Enterprise SP2. I have applied a MS patch to resolve known VSS issues.
Microsoft documentation indicates that there might be multple calls on the service via the API.
I have run out of ideas and was wondering if anybody could shed any light on this problem. The installation is for a housing association on ESXi 4.0, and there is no official support.
Setup a clean and fresh installation of the Exchange Server, join it to the Organization, move the mailboxes, mirror the public folders and remove the old Exchange Server following the Microsoft procedure.

Check your permissions on all drives so the converter has full access to everything.
Also you may want to stop exhange services before converting as this helps prevent Exchange DB corruption.
