I am new to VMWare ESX and Converter. I am trying to convert a physical windows XP sp2 with a 40 GB HDD to my ESX host. The host has about 100 Gb free in storage1.
It fails at 49% when cloing source to target machine.
I think I may have networking issues that may be causing the problem, but my two broadcom NetXtreme 5708 are set to 1000 Full.
Here is what i am getting in the logs:
Log for VMware Converter Agent, pid=2792, version=3.0.1, build=build-44840, option=Release, section=1

Removed vmdb connection /db/connection/#2/
I selelcted all the defaults and didn't modify hdd storage.
I am at a loss, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Here are some basic checks:
Check basic network
ping from source system to VC host
ping from VC to ESX target system
ping from source system to ESX target system
ping from ESX target system to VC host
ping from ESX target to source system
Check the port usage
telnet from source system to VC host port 902
telnet from source system to ESX target system port 902
telnet from VC to ESX server target system port 902
telnet from VC to source system ports 902, 445, 139
Note the Virtual Center or ESX server may be configured to listen on port 905. If so, check that all systems are configured consistently and that you can telnet to the appropriate ports.
Check credentials and privileges
Ensure that each username can login to all systems (you may want to create one admin account on all systems to simply the testing)
Ensure the user has permission to create a VM on the target system
Ensure the user has access to LUNs on the target system
Ensure the user has write privilege on target system storage devices
Verify that the user can create a new VM on each target system from VirtualCenter
Verify space requirements
Check available file space on all systems (Depending on your method you will either need space equal to the selected drive or to the space used on the source drive.)
Verify that the Target VMname does not exist on target system
Optionally, turn firewall off on 3.0.1 ESX servers
***Before proceeding to the next step, I would do a chkdsk and a defrag on the hard drive of the source machine.
If your doing a remote conversion I suggest installing converter directly on the source machine. Here are the steps:
1) if you have already installed Converter on the source machine using Domain Admin privileges then uninstall logged in as Domain admin
2) Reboot
3) Log on as local admin, user "administrator", and install VMware Converter
4) Reboot
5) Run VMware converter
Thanks for the suggestions mkagzi.
I run a host basedVI3, so no Virtual Center.
Ping and telnet tests are all successful before and after trying to run the wizard.
I created the same user & password on the source as I am using on the ESX target (root).
I am trying to create a VM from physcial pc with a 40 HDD and storage1 on the ESX taget has 90 GB free.
I have defrag'd and chkdsk'd the XP source prior to running converter locally after installing as local administrator.
It appears that i have the same error:
Failed to establish Vim connection to 192.168.2.20. Vmacore::Exception: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

The wizard seems to fail at cloning source volume to virtual machine.
Anything else I can try before contacting Support?
I'll offer a thought only because a lot of forum regulars are still having issues with the upgraded forums so have not been able to post much. My experience with ESX is limited so please correct anything I have wrong.
From what I understand errors after 5% are usually related to problems copying the data from the source to the destination. This would jive with your suspicion about network errors. I don't know what to tell you other than perhaps you can try to specify the destination as a standalone VM as a test. If the conversion completes, then it may be a network problem to your ESX server. You may also want to try running Converter on the XP machine you're converting, to reduce the number of network segments that the data has to travel over.
HTH.
Are you resizing the hard drive at all?
If not, then just increase the hard drive by 0.1, this will force a file by file copy as opposed to a block by block copy.
Please do all this while running the converter from the source machine logged on as local admin.
Thank you both, mkagzi and asatoran, for the suggestions.
An important thing is that I am unable to telnet to servernamne/ipaddress using port 902 directly after the error message.
When I create a standalone image to a Windows server share, it works fine.
I wasn't re-sizing at first, just accepting defaults, but when I increase by 0.1, it still fails with the same error.
I am making sure that I run the task when logged in as "computername\administrator"
Next I am going to try import from the standalone image into ESX and see what happens.
You will need to be able to telnet using port 902 at all times. This maybe the reason why your conversion is failing.
Hi
Not sure if you have resolved your issue, but I had the same issue, resolved the issue by choosing a different Data store. May be related to disk latency if your source disks are heavily used.
Was copying machine and resizing C & D Drives at the same time, on NetApp Storage.
