Converter appears to work but no video

Hey all.

I have a W2003 Server w/ SQL running on it that I am trying to convert to a VM. I am running the converter on this server, saving the files to a local directory. This approach worked fine for an XP machine I had.

The converter completes fine without any errors. After FTP'ing the files to the VM host, I try to start the VM. It appears to start (I see disk access and such) but I don't get any video - just a blank screen. I don't even see the VMWare "Bios" boot screen.

I tried it a couple of times with the same results.

Any ideas that might help would be great.

Does the VM write a log ?

If yes - post it

I didn't ask for the server-log.

Do you have a vmware.log after trying to start the VM ?

where did you convert this machine to?

Are you physically at the keyboard or remotely connected when you see the black screen?

Hello.

To the 1st reply, I didn't upload the VM's log as it only had "started" and "stopped" in it, from when I started it up and when I stopped it. Nothing else. Figured it was useless and thus wasn't what you were looking for. This was the only thing I saw that had anything that might be useful.

Re: how I access the box, I am accessing both boxes via a KVM switch which works over IP - thus the equivalent of being on a physical mouse/keyboard/video. All of the work has been done this way, and I have no problem seeing the other VMs running on the same box I am trying to start this one on. The Console is running on the VM host.

Re: how I converted it, I did it to itself (which worked for my XP machine just fine), as well as to a NAS box. Same results.

I had originally tried running the converter while coming in via VNC, but suspected that might do something funky to the video driver and thus used the KVM to do it, so I would be using the native driver.

I'm experiencing the same issue: I converted a physical Windows 2003 Server machine to a VM but it will not boot in VMWare Server. I just get a black screen but I see occasional disk and CD activity. The original server was dual-processor with SCSI disks if that matters.

I successfully followed the same procedure to convert a Windows 2003 domain controller to a VM, so I'm not sure what the problem is here. Any ideas?

Can you try to connect to the VM using RDP?

That is a good idea, however I am not sure it will work. The other systems I migrated lost their network IP settings, so I am guessing that I won't be able to connect to it. But I am going to try. Will let you know once I recopy it again. Thanks.

My problem is solved! Here's what I just did as best I can remember:

\- In VMWare Server, I created a new virtual machine. When it asked me if I wanted to use Typical or Custom settings, I chose Custom.

\- When it asked me about creating a virtual disk, I told it to use an existing virtual disk, and browsed over to the .vmdk disk that Converter created (the one that's part of the unbootable VM).

\- When asked about the host adapter type, I chose LSI Logic. BusLogic was in use originally as is evident from my log postings, but the theory was it was a compatibility issue with this driver.

\- Once the VM was created, I told Server to start the VM. I got a warning saying that the disk was configured to accept a BusLogic adapter and that, though VMWare Server can convert it to LSI Logic, it may cause the operating system to not be able to boot. I told it to convert it anyway (what did I have to lose right?)

...and presto, Windows booted normally!

Ok heres my dilemma. I converted a win xp machine from workstation to esx 3.5. Now after I boot I get the Splashscreen and then it disappears. I cant put vmtools on ti due to I cant see anything on the monitor and I dont see a way to do it automatically with windows xp.

Can anyone help,

vmware black screen after p2v conversion - I realise this is an old post but this may be relevent. I recently had the same issue. What I found was that the VM had in fact booted. However I was trying to view the Esxi server using the VI client on a remote server. The problem manifested itself in that I had RDP'd on to the remote server using only 256 colour depth as this is normal. But when you then launch the VI client and open the console of a VM on the Esxi server the screen is black! The default VGA settings for the Virtual Machine you converted are most likely to be 1280x1024x32bit or some such thing. If you have this scenario it can be solved. I launched RDP but before connecting to my remote server I changed the colour depth to 32bit. I know this will be slower but who cares at this point. Then once connected to the remote server I launch the VI client and open the console of the converted machine, hey presto I can see the video on the virtual machine! Another trick is to install VNC on the machine to be converted BEFORE you convert it. Then as long as it has network configured you can VNC on to it after conversion.
