Converter Standalone 5.0 best practice usage

We have an all-new VMware View 5 environment using vSphere 5 and vCenter Server 5.  Working on setting up new and different Converter Standalone.  Is there a best-practice recommendation for how to set up and use the new Converter?  We have cases where we need to bring VMs created in VMware Workstation into the ESXi 5 environment.  In the old version, we would right-click on an object in vCenter and very easily import the VM.  Trying to work out the best way to handle this in new version without the vCenter plug-in.

Looking at the documents, it appears that the Converter Server component could be installed on a virtual server, and accessed from desktop installation of Converter Client.  Is this how the product should be used?

We have a virtual server running Update Manager.  Would it work to install Converter Server on that, and access remotely through Converter Client?  Is there a requirement that Converter has to be on a separate server?

This whole new way of doing conversions seems strange to me.  Can anyone explain why VMware chose to introduce a complete new client and server for this function?
