Convert into an RDM

This might be a feature request, but I will try it here first.

Does anyone know how to use an RDM as the target for a convert operation rather then a VMFS partition? Basically, I want to tell it to put the data on a LUN rather then into a VMDK file. Can I pre-create the pointer file and point at that?

Is this something that is going to be included in a later version of converter?

Please, for those of us implementing complex storage architectures, give us this ability. Also, the ability to deploy from template into an RDM would be VERY, VERY high on my list.

Thx!

Converter only creates a .vmdk file. Selecting an RDM would be a feature request.

You can log that here for added visibility.

A workaround is to create a VM that uses an RDM and then use P2V Assistant to populate that RDM. Converter unfortunately always creates the .vmdk for you.

Hi!

Maybe it's too late now to send an answer. Anyway, a possible workaround for us is using the converter and after that converting the .vmdk to a rdm/rdmp with vmkfstools -i . You can find a thread about this method e.g. here:

What about doing the reverse? Can you convert an RDM to a VMDK?
