Convert P2V CentOS 5.4 with softraid and LVM

Hello I try to convert the follow system:

Disk A.->

Partition 0

->md0

Partition 1

->md1

Disk B ->

Partition 0

->md0

Partition 1

->md1

md0

->/boot

md1

->LVM

->VGXXXX

->LVRoot

->LVSwap

The converter see root and swap.

But when I try to start the process I only get the error: "Error: Unable to create the virtual machine"

Try to convert an flat system without softraid and lvm will work.

Any ideas where the problem live?

unable to create ?

is that vmdk that needs to be created very large ? - then you might run into a timeout ... searchthis forum - such a case was discussed recently - a few weeks ago maybe

I don't think so.

The root file system is 8GB big and only 1,5GB are used. Swap is only 256MB.

I have do some testing:

physical machine with LVM without raid ->will work.

physical machine with raid and without LVM -> will not work : "Unable to detect source volumes"

physical machine with raid and LVM -> will not work: error see top of post.

I think the converter have big problems with soft raid under Linux.

Hi,

the vmware converter don't support/work if on the linux source is running a software raid (mdX devices).

Then i would recommend you (if it's possible) disable the soft raid before using the standalone converter.

Anyway you can use the converter boot CD (you need enterprise vmware license) to make the conversion. The boot cd support (cold conversion) source linux with soft raid devices.

Pablo

Pablo - for a good cold clone CD you do not need a Enterprise VMware License - on my site I offer a construction kit for a Coldclone CD that is better then the one from VMware and it needs no Enterprise license.
