Convert ESX 3 VMs to vSphere 5 VMs (Win 2k3 STD).

Hello to everyone.  Familiar with ESX 3 but a newbie to vSphere 5.

I have an single ESX 3.0 Host (yes...should have updated years ago...I know) that I am now ready to move VMs over from it to our new ESXi 5.0 Host (vSphere Essentials so I have vCenter available to me now).  My issue is that the vSphere converter does not list Win 2003 STD as a compatible guest OS..?  Is the converter just not going to work on a 2003 STD server or is it just not officially supported?  Just asking before I go chasing a red-herring.

Also, if anyone knows of a set of documents or a path to do this converstion, I would greatly appreicate a pointer in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Clark

I assume you are referring to http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/conv_sa_50_rel_notes.html#guestos

Windows Server 2003 SP2, R2 (32-bit and 64-bit)

This means Windows 2003 with SP2 as well as R2 are supported.

What version of Converter are you using? VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0 supports Windows Server 2003 SP2, R2 (32-bit and 64-bit)

VMs are Windows 2003 STD (non-R2) 32-bit...thus my post.  Thanks for asking as that is an important detail I was not clear on in my OP.

Oh, I am attempting to use vSphere Standalone Converter 5.

Hi Clark,

you can always use the old version of converter against your virtual machines and then upgrade the VMware Tools and virtual hardware to the lastest version.

also what you can do is to present the luns to the new hosts (if there is a SAN), power off and migrate your VMs to the new hosts. Then upgrade VMware tools and virtual hardwre.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Nicolás

Again, your source VM is supported.  Are you connecting to vCenter or your ESX Host?  Is the VM powered off or on?  If you edit settings of the VM in question go to the options tab, is the Guest OS identified correctly?

You have SP2 installed on the guest OS, correct?

Wow...totally missed that comma after the SP2 and misinterpreted....(I kind of thought that dropping Win 2003 STD conversion was a bit soon).

Sorry to bug you guys over a grammar misread on my part.   Thanks for the quick replies and it's likely you will hear from me again before this project is over.
