Cold Clone VSPHERE 4.1 Virtual Center

HI!

Id like to cold clone a Windows Server 2003 Machine. I use the VMware-convertercd-4.1.1-206170 coldclone.iso. After a few seconds the imoport fails

I think the problem is that the Converter (WinPE) cannot resolve the ESX Hostname:

2010-11-24 20:24:02.515 'P2V' 772 error] Task failed: P2VError FILE_OPEN_FAILED(vpxa-nfc://[MD3200i] TEC/TEC.vmdk@esx01:902!52 1d 20 5d 1a 85 3f 7b-83 0d 1f 12 db 7d e9 8a)

So how can i cold clone a Physical Machine without DNS?

Any Ideas??

Greats HB

Hi,

You could try few ways listed below:

1) add the host entry to your DNS server, or a temp dns server and then go for manual ip setting to define the temp dns

2) use IP address to convert as suggested above

3) perform a hot migration where the host can be added in to host file where the converter is running.

Welcome to the community.

The thread has been moved to the Converter area.

Have you tried to convert directly on a host using the IP address?

Yes, but it is the same Problem. The ESX Server sends his hostname for File Acccess!!

Thanks for the answer

HI!

1) yes, thats how we solved it at least

2) brings the same error! because the ESX sends the Hostname

3) I am afraid to hot migrate MSSQL or EXCHANGE Servers....

Antoher Solution is to manipulate the machines host file - Funny thing!

Thanks for your reply!

So how can i cold clone a Physical Machine without DNS?

let the CD boot

don't start any operation yet

get a cmd - by using the browser and finding cmd.exe in X:\i386\system32

run ipconfig to see which IP you have

ipconfig /all

ping the ESX by its IP

ping 11.12.13.14

then add the wanted hostname - ip relations to the hosts file in X:\i386\system32\

echo 11.12.13.14 targetesx >> X:\i386\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

if you want a gui for that download the tool penetcfg.exe and add it to your CD

now ping using hostnames

ping targetesx

if it works - close cmd.exe and start a task in Converter.
